Adhesive vinyl wall murals: textured or concrete walls need a higher-tack adhesive

A smooth wall takes a repositionable adhesive; a textured or concrete wall calls for a higher-tack one. A test on the actual wall confirms it.

An adhesive vinyl wall mural does not stick the same way to every wall. Manufacturer Nekoosa's product guide offers two removable adhesives for wall graphics: a microsphere adhesive for smooth painted walls, wallpaper, wood paneling, and glass, and a higher-tack one for textured painted walls, concrete, painted plywood, and low-VOC paints. Before choosing the material, it helps to know what the wall is like.

Materials have also expanded. In 2026, printable polypropylene (PP) films appeared—a plastic different from the PVC used in traditional vinyl—designed for interior decoration, signage, and displays. These films add finishes, but they do not remove the need to test on the actual wall.

The discussion of finishes also changes: matte, gloss, soft-touch, and textures resembling canvas or leather are available. Not all of them will be available in Colombia or behave the same way on a specific wall. An installed sample remains the useful reference before producing the complete mural.

When a commercial piece is visible from a road or public-use area, its installation may fall under Medellín’s outdoor visual advertising rules. A mural inside a business does not automatically become a registration case. Visibility and installation conditions change how the registration is assessed.

What has changed in adhesive vinyl wall murals?

The development is in PVC-free PP films that accept UV and latex printing—printing technologies for specialized surfaces—and offer more wall finishes. A mural can pursue a more textured appearance without necessarily relying on PVC.

Taghleef Industries introduced a PP range for wall graphics in August, with gloss, matte, soft-touch, scratch-resistant, and textured laminates. The finishes come from recent solutions by international manufacturers.

That variety does not amount to a universal specification. Availability, cost, lead time, warranty, and performance on a particular paint vary by supplier and project. There is no identical performance across every wall and every material.

What adhesive does a vinyl wall mural need?

The choice usually starts with the surface rather than the design. Smooth walls use removable microsphere adhesives—tiny particles that allow repositioning—while textured walls, concrete, or low-VOC paints usually call for stronger removable adhesives. Texture and paint can completely change how the mural is attached.

The technical guide from Nekoosa distinguishes those uses and recommends testing compatibility on the specific surface. A test helps assess adhesion, removal, and potential effects on paint before full installation. A sample on the actual wall reduces uncertainty during installation.

Removable does not mean the outcome is the same in every setting. Paint age, moisture, finish, cleaning, and exposure time affect removal. Removability needs assessment under the real wall and project conditions.

When should a vinyl mural be checked against Medellín rules?

A mural with a commercial message visible from a road or public-use area may be considered outdoor visual advertising. The rule does not depend only on it being vinyl: visibility and installation method matter. A mural visible from the street may need a different review than an indoor one.

The Medellín Mayor’s Office publishes the registration process and requests an image or photograph of the advertising and its measurements when available. To define materials, production, and installation, projects can start with outdoor signage and vehicle branding in Medellín. The registration scope is determined case by case, based on the piece and its location.
